The ACSM1 was launched in Europe earlier this year and extends ABB‘s drives portfolio to provide speed, torque and motion control across a broad range of machinery applications, from basic to highly demanding. It complements ABB‘s extensive range of variable speed drives controlling the performance of electric motors. It also strengthens ABB‘s leading position in the AC drives market, and underscores the company‘s commitment to help customers improve productivity and use energy more efficiently. Advanced features and flexibility “This new drive combines the high performance of DTC (direct torque control) with advanced control features and flexibility in hardware and software,” said Michael Link, ABB‘s product manager for motion control drives in Germany.”That means new opportunities for energy savings in a broader range of applications.” Those include processes in the food and beverage industry, material handling, packaging, paper and paper board, printing, rubber and plastic, textiles and woodworking. Electric motors are the workhorses of industry, providing the mechanical power to drive conveyor belts and cooling fans, water pumps and steam plants, but they needlessly consume vast quantities of electricity in the process. Using drives to control their performance ensures motors use only the electricity they really need, and the savings can be substantial. Fine motor control Variable speed drives control the speed of a motor by regulating the frequency and voltage of the power it receives. Unlike other control methods, drives allow fine performance control with smooth transitions between operating modes. This improves process quality and reduces damage caused by sudden stops and starts. Examples show that running a motor at half speed consumes only one eighth the power required for full-speed operation. With current energy costs soaring and increasing pressure being brought to bear on the environmental impact of industry, few businesses can afford to ignore such potential for savings. The ACSM1 was specifically designed for use in complex machinery and incorporates the flexibility demanded by machine manufacturers. Modular design It can be used with synchronous and induction motors, and its modular design and flexible software make it suitable for use in a range of applications, such as material handling systems, automatic warehouses, winders, spinning machines and also for high-speed applications in low-noise environments. ABB is famous for its energy-saving motor drives, a number of which are on display at Hannover Fair. In 2006, the company‘s installed base of drives saved an estimated 130 terawatt-hours of electricity. That equates to a saving of 109 million tons of CO2 emissions.[/color]
