We‘re determined to stay ahead of our competitors.” ABB robots are part of that strategy and are helping Tong Yang maintain its competitive lead. As Cheng points out, the company was the first in Asia to buy and benefit from ABB‘s IRB 6650S shelf robot, with the uniquely innovative IRC5 controller and RobotWare Plastics Mold software. The ABB robotics system was installed in April 2006 on a car bumper production line where it sits on top of a 2,500-ton injection molding machine. When the system went into 24-hour operation it achieved a 20 percent increase in productivity, boosting capacity by an additional 3,000 bumpers a month. The production cycle was cut by 10-15 seconds and the number of staff manning the line was reduced. ABB is our ‘first choice‘ “The results are beyond our expectations,” says Yuh-Sheng Liang, manager of the company‘s aftermarket manufacturing division. “Being able to use the six axes of the IRB 6650S has meant more flexibility, increased speed and more stability. The whole operation becomes more efficient.” According to Cheng, the factory operators are very impressed with the easy-to-use, intuitive RobotWare software, which requires just a few steps to create new production programs for different car bumper designs. The use of icons instead of complicated language programs is also highly appreciated. Tong Yang Group has 13 ABB robots at its two Taiwan production facilities. “We are constantly looking at how we can apply the use of robots in our manufacturing areas,” says Guann Chen, deputy director at Tong Yang‘s R&D center. “We are looking to enhance quality, cost and safety, and ABB is our first choice.”[/COLOR]
