LOUIS, May 31, 2007-Emerson (NYSE: EMR) today announced that it has joined The Green Grid (www.thegreengrid.org), a non-profit consortium dedicated to advancing energy efficiency in data centers and business computing ecosystems. Emerson will participate in The Green Grid as a contributing member through its Emerson Network Power business, which is the global leader in enabling Business-Critical Continuity; and offers a range of power, cooling and service solutions for data centers and other critical facilities. Emerson Network Power will work closely with The Green Grid‘s many members to develop meaningful operating standards, measurement methods, processes and new technologies to improve energy efficient performance of global data centers as the demand for computing power continues to rise at an accelerating rate. "The Green Grid provides an ideal forum for industry leaders to come together and discuss new approaches to increasing energy efficiency, while promoting and building upon best practices and recognized successes," said David Farr, chairman, chief executive officer and president of Emerson. As part of its ongoing response to the surge in energy demand in data centers, Emerson recently collaborated with Intel Corporation to implement a new digital power management system. The open standard PMBus; digital power management system brings power management to the server level, which is a critical step in optimizing power consumption within data centers and data-com facilities. Another Emerson solution that can be deployed to decrease data center energy consumption is the Liebert XD family of cooling solutions. Depending upon capacity, the environmentally friendly refrigerant used by the Liebert XD is 27 to 54 percent more efficient than water as a coolant, enabling the technology to deliver significant energy savings compared to water-cooled systems. The Liebert XD System can save more than 30 percent of the energy typically used to cool the data center. According to a study released in October 2006 by the Data Center Users Group, a group of influential data center and facility managers formed by Emerson Network Power, data center energy efficiency is fast becoming a priority in the industry. Forty-two percent of survey respondents said they have either analyzed efficiency or are currently analyzing it. Respondents perceived the greatest opportunities for energy efficiency to be in the areas of cooling equipment (49 percent), servers (46 percent), power equipment (39 percent) and storage (21 percent).
